Rules for Horticultural Exhibitors

Once entered, all specimens become the property of the Utah Rose Society and may not be removed without the permission of the Show Chairman.

1.This Rose Show shall be governed by the rules, regulations and guidelines of the American Rose Society as set forth in the Guidelines and Rules for Judging Roses. All questions relating to interpretation of rules regarding judging shall be referred to the Judge’s Chairman. Decisions of the Judges will be final.

2.Competition is open to all rose growers. Exhibitors need not be a member of any rose society. All entries must have been grown in the exhibitor’s private outdoor garden and must be correctly named and classified.

3. All parties from the same garden MUST enter as one exhibitor. One entry of the same variety and from the same garden shall be allowed in any one class.

4.Roses must be exhibited with and ARS approved exhibition name (AEN) to be eligible for entry in an ARS authorized rose show or they will be disqualified. Names may be verified in the latest editions of the following sources:

5. Exhibitors must use official ARS entry tags which will be available at the rose show. Both the top and the bottom of the tag must be completed.

6. Varieties having “climbing “ as part of their class name must be entered in their respective bush-type class.

7. Questions regarding the appropriate class should be directed to the Classification Committee. Any entry in poor condition will be removed during the show.

8. Aluminum foil and plant material may be used in containers to hold roses upright. Exhibitors are encouraged to keep wedging materials below the lip of the container. A judge may penalize an entry if the wedging material extends above the top of the container, according to its degree of distraction.

9. All containers for specimen entries are to be provided by the Show Committee, except where otherwise specified.

10. Exhibits, prizes and awards must remain intact until the close of the show. Specimen entries become the property of the Show Committee and may not be removed without permission.

11. The Placement Committee will place all entries with the exception of the Challenge Class exhibits and Arrangements which shall be placed by the exhibitor under the direction of the Show Committee.

12. All collections must be exhibited in the proper container or containers as specified under the class number.

13. While the Society will take every precaution to safeguard containers and materials furnished by exhibitors, it cannot be held responsible in the case of damage or loss. Prizes are to be taken home on the day of the show.

14. Judges judging solely in the Arrangement Division may enter specimens in the Horticulture Division and vice versa. Judges are encouraged to enter the Judges section.

15. First, second, third and honorable mention ribbons will be awarded in classes on the basis of quality in the opinion of the judges. Only blue ribbon winner are eligible for awards. No award is required for any entry or class.

16. Entries will be disqualified if they are:

A. misnamed, misclassed, misplaced, unlabeled or mislabeled.

B. exhibit stem-on-stem (exceptions: OGR’s, species, and shrubs).

C. show the presence of a foreign substance

D. not disbudded ( where required for one-bloom-perstem specimens).

E. any rose entered with a name that has not been recognized by the ARS.

17. At the time of judging, an exhibition rose should be at its most perfect phase of possible beauty, which is usually one– half to three-fourths open. Specimens in the fully open classes must have stamens visible. Length of stem should be in proportion to the size of bloom. Foliage should be clean and free of spray residue.

18. The preparation room will be open at 7:30AM on Saturday June 18, 2011 . Entries will be accepted from 7:30– 9:30 AM. No entries will be accepted after 9:30 AM.

Class 12 Tin Can Alley
Place your discards in an old tin can. Use 6-10 blooms at any stage and any combination of blooms.

Class 13 Large Rose Bowl
The entry shall consist of a minimum of five roses of any type. The blooms should be at exhibition stage and floating in a large 12” rose bowl provided by the URS.

The exhibit shall be scored as follows:

Bloom quality 60 points
Compatibility of blooms 15 points
Effectiveness of floral design 25 points
Total 100 points

Class 14 Most Fragrant
One blooms or spray of a fragrant rose, any type, variety or color. Entry will be judged on the following scale of points.

To highlight the beauty of simplicity. Any type or variety of rose having five to twelve petals. One bloom, one spray, one bloom with side-buds, or one lateral bloom.

All roses will be placed alphabetically for each class. Each variety in each class shall constitute a separate sub-class to be judged separately. Exhibitors may make as many entries as desired in each class, provided each entry is of a different variety.

these roses are designated with a double asterisk (**) in the Handbook for Selecting Roses. One bloom, one bloom with side buds, or one spray.

Class 34 Old Garden Roses (after 1867)
All varieties introduced in or after 1867 or with an unknown date of origin after 1867.
One bloom, one bloom with side buds or one spray.
Eligible for the ARS Victorian Award Certificate.

Class 35 Lateral Bloom
One Old Garden Rose, Shrub, Climber or Rambler cane with a lateral bloom. Not to exceed 18 inches above the neck of the container.

One bloom or spray of any classic shrub with a family designation of (HKor), (HMoy), (HMsk), or (HRg).

Open to exhibitors who have never won a Blue Ribbon in an Accredited ARS Show.

Class 44 A. One bloom, without side buds. Any type of rose.

Class 44 B. One spray of two or more blooms. Any type of rose.

Section I Junior

Open to exhibitors who are 18 years of age or younger. Novices are encouraged to enter specimens in other sections of the show.
Specimenswinning blue ribbons in the Novice section will be considered by judges for awards in other sections of the show as appropriate, including but not limited to Queen, King, and Princess of the Show.

Class 45 A. One bloom, without side buds. Any type of rose.

Class 45 B. One spray of two or more blooms. Any type of rose.

One bloom or spray of an Old Garden Rose.

Section K Photography

Photography Rules: General Rules of the Show in the Horticulture
Schedule shall apply to the photography entries where applicable. By entering this Show, given under ARS guidelines, exhibitors agree to abide by these guidelines and the rules stated in this Schedule.

A. Entries are limited to one photograph per class per exhibitor.
B. Photographs entered in a previous ARS Show may not be entered in this Show and all photographs must have been taken within the past three years.
C. All photographs are to be matted and mounted (not framed) and must not exceed 16”x20” overall, including mat.
D. The rose in the photograph should be named on the entry tag , if possible, although this will not affect the judging.
E. Photographs may be in color or black and white.
F. The name of the photographer must not appear on the face of the photograph or on its mat. Presence of a name will cause the entry to be disqualified. Exhibitors may label their photographs on the back where the label cannot be seen during judging.
G. A blue ribbon will be awarded to the best photograph in each class, and an award will be given for the best overall entry. Other ribbons will be awarded as merited.
H. Photographs must remain in place until the close of the show.

Class 51 A rose garden, Park, or Landscape Scene.

Section L Best of the Show

All the judges shall determine the best horticulture exhibit from only those entries on the awards podium. Any horticultural entry on the awards podium is eligible.

DIVISION III- ARRANGEMENT CLASSES

Arrangement Rules

1. All roses must be outdoor garden grown and must be of high quality. Plant material other than rose may be commercially grown.
2. A rose or roses must be the dominant flower in all arrangements.
3. Names of all roses in each arrangement must be written on the entry tag.
4. One entry per exhibitor is allowed in each class, but an exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired.
5. Accessories are not allowed unless specifically permitted in the schedule. Flowers other than roses, and dried and/or treated dried plant materials are allowed unless prohibited by the schedule.
6. A card of intent may be included with an arrangement as explanation of the arranger’s interpretation of the theme or class title, unless the schedule specifically prohibits it.
7. An arrangement incorrectly placed in one class when it should have been in another, will be judged in the class in which it is placed
8. All exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor.
9. No one but the exhibitor may touch or move an arrangement. However, in extreme circumstances, if all efforts to locate the arranger have failed, an arrangements chairman may carefully move an arrangement.
10. By entering this show given under ARS rules, exhibitors agree to abide by those rules.
11. American Rose Society Medal Certificates will be awarded if merited. Only those arrangements using arranger grown, fresh roses are eligible for the ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze medal and miniature medal certificates. Exhibitors shall mark their entry tags “AG” or Arranger grown if they have grown their own roses.
12. In classes for miniature arrangements, the arrangement must conform to the size specified in each class. And ONLY those roses classified by the ARS as miniature or miniflora may be used.

14. Arrangements may be picked up after the conclusion of the show.
The Utah Rose Society will take all reasonable precaution, but will not be responsible for the arrangements, containers, or accessories.

Infringement of the following will result in severe penalty:
1. Painted or dyed fresh plant materials. Live creatures are not allowed.
2. The use of plant material on the state or local conservation lists is not permitted.
3. The American flag or flag of any country may not be used in an arrangement or as a decoration in any way.

There are two causes for disqualification of an arrangement:
1. Roses are not outdoor grown.
2. Use of artificial plant material.

Class 6– East Meets West A design in the oriental free style manner with no limits on materials

Section C – Artist

Modern or abstract arrangements with designer’s choice of materials, but must include fresh roses

Class 7 – Fireworks in July A modern design without restrictions

Class 8– Tourist Trap Use an accessory

Any type of design using only fresh roses with dried/ treated plant material

Class 9– Hiking Trail

Class 10– Utah’s Winter Beauty Use white in the design

Miniature Modern or abstract design with designer’s choice of materials, but must include fresh roses, not to exceed 10” in height, width or depth. .

Limited to accredited or apprentice judges that are judging this show. No design or material restrictions. Type of design must be written on the entry tag.

Class 15 – Pioneer Past– A standard design

Class 16 – Frosty Morning-A miniature arrangement not to exceed ten inches in height, width or depth

Section H – Novice

For those who have won no more than three first place awards In the Arrangement Section
A novice may enter any class except Judges section and mark “N” on the top right corner of the entry tag.

Section J –Court of Etiquette

Table designs using fresh roses and designer’s choice of other plant material. No fresh food or silverware permitted.

Class 17-Tailgate Picnic
Use either BYU or U of U for a picnic for two people. Use standard roses

Class 18– Al fresco on the patio
A functional one place setting for outdoor eating using standard roses

Class 19– Celebrate
A drinks tray for two people using miniature roses

A tea party for two or four using doll size dishes and miniature roses.
